How can I repair my lawn after a squirrel digging wtinter?

I live in central New Jersey. In my front yard, there (2) acorn trees, approx. 70 to 80 feet high. The width of these trees cover my entire garden. Since the fall, with all the acorns fall, the squirrels have had a field day digging shallow wells across the front lawn. I do not have a lawn service. I do what I can to keep my lawn, but do not have much of a green thumb. So my question is, what is the best procedure to repair my lawn? I know I need to flatten or fill all holes, and replant, but what is the correct way to do this?

The holes made by the squirrels dig up the buried nuts in the autumn are generally very small, so that should only be necessary to sprinkle a little sand into the holes (or sand lightly brush if there are lots of holes), then complete with finely sifted soil (or compost). Grass seed should not be necessary.
